ABOUT
I am an artist and veterinary orthopedic surgeon living in Columbia, MO. I work in numerous media (graphite, watercolor, gouache, acrylic and oil) and consider my work representational. I enjoy portraiture, landscapes and still life as well illustration work.
I grew up surrounded by art from my father who was a commercial artist and seemed to always be drawing or working on some kind of artistic project. Some of my fondest childhood memories are going to art museums with him and having him introduce different genres and styles to me. We had a reproduction of an Andrew Wyeth painting in our house, and I remember staring at it and getting lost in the world it created. I loved drawing as a kid and was always doodling in class or at home and loved to copy fantasy illustrations done by professional artists.
As I grew up, I was encouraged to just "leave art as a hobby" and pursue something more "serious." I majored in Biology in college, but took Art History and drawing classes at night because I was still longing for that creative outlet. During veterinary school, I was hired as an unlicensed medical illustrator and worked with numerous departments in producing hundreds of medical illustrations.
Over the past several years, I've been working to recommit myself to studying and practicing regularly in the pursuit of improving and refining my techniques. My artistic influences include the Wyeths, Edward Seago, Willard Metcalf, and Aldro Hibbard.
